Who starts competing at 45? I did! At the age of 48, Cathy Savage coached me because she believed in me. That is how she coaches every woman with a dream. Competing had been a dream of mine throughout my life. I would stare at the beautiful women in the back of the fitness magazines with their trophies and think about looking like them and achieving those goals. I was always active and in great shape, but I always felt a desire to take my fitness to the next level, and achieve more. So, what was stopping me? It just never seemed like the “right” time. In my 20’s I was focused on my first job and being newly married. In my 30’s, it was all about having a young family, volunteering and making the time to get to the gym. In my 40’s, well….it finally became the “right” time. A month away from turning 42, I finally changed the path I was on and got divorced.

After 17 years of marriage, and being a full-time Mom, it was now time for me to embark upon a new journey. Now was the time to figure out who I was, where I wanted to go, and who I wanted to become. My daughters came first— then, now and forever, so whatever my dreams were, they had to fit into my new life with my girls. Since most of my adult life had been spent working out, and being home with my daughters, I decided to get certified as a personal trainer. It seemed perfect for a 1st job in 15 years! In 2005, while working at Bally’s I met a young woman who was going to compete in her 1st fitness show. Of course, I was curious, and she told me to get in touch with a woman named Cathy Savage whom she had just met at her competition. At the time I was 44 years old, and was thinking that maybe my time to compete had passed. However, Nikki assured me that there were lots of older ladies who competed… Gee, thanks!

About a year later, I finally made the call and met with Cathy Savage. My life has never been the same since that Labor Day weekend, 2006. It took me until October of 2007 to get the courage to get on stage. Cathy and her staff encouraged me, and empowered me with all the right tools to feel as prepared as I could have been to finally walk on stage. From weights and cardio training to proper nutrition, she and her staff were there to guide me.

In 2008, it was time to really focus and Cathy took me under her wings. I trained with her constantly. As my coach, she took my mind and body to a level I never thought I could reach. At the time, most of the competitors were about 20 years younger than me, the oldest about 7 years younger. Being older, got in my way a lot, but Cathy helped me push me through that hurdle and finally embrace my age. Cathy’s positive attitude, incredible wisdom and amazing coaching skills took me to a level of competition I only dreamed of attaining. She inspires me to be the best person I can be, and motivates me to take whatever I am doing to the next level. She is the perfect coach.

In 2009, and at the age of 48, I became the first Master’s Bikini Champion to win back to back National titles. It was truly a dream come true, and I owe it all to Cathy Savage. If you want to be a successful competitor, you have found the right place.
